I went to Kobe for the last few days of my Out There Adventure and whilst I was there I managed to attend yet another Japanese Top League match where the Kobelco Steelers played Yamaha Jubilo. This match was an absolute blowout, Kobelco Steelers beat Yamaha 99-17.

A few days prior to the match, I was able to attend a Kobelco Steelers training session where I caught up with Andy Ellis and Dan Carter. It was the highlight of my entire 6 weeks away to see Dan again, as the last time I saw him was in London in 2015.

Catching up with Andy and Dan, seeing the match was probably the biggest highlight of my 6 weeks around the world, and I’m glad it was the last thing before I went back to Australia that turned out to be the best thing.

THERE’S RUGBY IN JAPAN? #OutThereJapan

Did you know that there are more registered rugby players in Japan than in New Zealand (who are the World Champions!)

I didn’t know that either!

Thanks to a mate of mine, Andy Ellis (who happens to be an ex-All Black!) I managed to get to a rugby match in Japan.

I saw his team, Kobelco Steelers take on the Panasonic Wild Knights, who another mate, Berrick Barnes plays for.

It was a very good experience including being recognised in the crowd (awkward!) and showing the differences of what’s on offer at the rugby in Japan!

Since I’ve been in Israel, the hottest topic of conversation for me is,

“Is Israel really safe?”

To be honest from what I saw, it was just as safe than any other country I’ve travelled to.

I do believe that the media has a huge influence in how they make Israel look like and how people think it’s unsafe and a bad place to visit.

From my experience travelling there, I will be recommending it as a destination to visit, and I am already planning a return visit in early 2020.

Today’s vlog is a bit more a lack of vlogs. I visited Sapporo and Fukuoka on my travels and my health had a turn for the worse.

Not only did I have to battle with a flare up from my autoimmune disease, but my old friend depression and anxiety gatecrashed the party.

Although I had visited both cities, I didn’t film any of it. My priorities was about getting better and trying my best to get out of the rut I was in mentally.

Thankfully I’ve come through this whole experience with a really positive attitude and learnt more about what I can and can’t do, and how a holiday shouldn’t be as stressful as working, otherwise it sucks the life out of travel.

Let’s skip a few days of my trip to Japan, and head onto Nagasaki.

I headed out to Kumagaya today to see the Panasonic Wild Knights take on Canon Eagles in the Top League competition in Japan.

I was hoping to see my friend Berrick play for Panasonic, unfortunately 8 weeks prior to me filming this he injured his ankle playing in Perth and it turned out to be a broken ankle which ruled him out for the season.

His injury didn’t deter me from going to the game, as I learnt at this game, just how insane Japanese rugby fans really are. I met 4 Japanese fans pre game and I had the best laughs with these guys.

I definitely recommend heading to a Top League match in Japan, the fans are passionately crazy and really get into supporting their side.

This is a very special edition vlog for you guys, yesterday I had the PLEASURE of watching the rugby team that I travel all over for, win their 9th Super Rugby title.

For those wanting to know, I was not at the game as I had only received my passport back after it had to sent away for some work and study visas I require in a few months time whilst I’m on my trip around the world.

So I was with the All Blacks Fans In Brisbane meet up I host and this is how it turned out!

Whilst I was in Hiroshima I decided on a few days off to catch up on vlogs and have a bit of R&R after I had been sick for a good chunk of my Japan adventure.

I then headed onto Tokyo on the Shinkansen for the All Blacks vs Japan game the next day, so here’s more video of the Japanese countryside and something that eluded me for a while - seeing Mt Fuji.

The entire trip took about 5 hours with a change at Shin Kobe station.

The next vlogs will be a bit more exciting than train travel days so make sure to look out for them!

So 2017 has been a bit of a roller coaster. I’ve been battling an auto immune disease so I spent a lot of time trying to learn to manage it better.

Hospital stays, invasive testing and days off work was a very long an arduous year.

Best thing was definitely knowing that I could take the positives out of this year, being on media for the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens, going to see the BNZ Crusaders in Melbourne and then watching them on my iPad 2 months later whilst in bed take out their 8th Super Rugby title.

I then spent 16 days in Japan, I might of broken my toe but it was the best experience to be part of, with the highlight of rolling up to a Kobelco Steelers training session and also a Panasonic Wild Knights game and surprising some friends who play rugby in Japan.

2018 is shaping up for some good things, heading to Christchurch to see my partner, Lana is one of those highlights, going to Perth in 2 weeks is another, but my big one is heading to Dublin, Berlin, Israel, Palestine and Japan in September/October/November for a 6 week adventure I am so looking forward to the most.

Bring it on.

I head to Hiroshima today in this vlog and I show today the trek from Nagasaki to Hakata (Fukuoka) then onto Hiroshima.

Not all of this was travelled on the Shinkansen, the island of Kyushu is serviced mainly by a local express train called the Hakone line.

It’s only from north of Hakata that is serviced by numerous Shinkansen lines.

I travelled on my JR Pass that services all of Japan for a 2 week period I was there. I do believe it’s the fastest but also probably the most cost effective way to travel Japan as it does include all train travel on the JR lines including subway lines.

I had to share with you all the Japanese country side and the cities as well. It was a 4 hour trek from Nagasaki to Hiroshima but it was great to see seaside, countryside and finally getting into Hiroshima and seeing the cityside.

I ended up in Jail! No seriously I did!

Jailhouse Accommodation is part of the old Addington Jail that was decommissioned in 1999. It was converted into a hostel and reopened in 2006. You can get a sense of what it was like to be a prisoner in the jail as due to heritage building laws, the entire structure of the building has been left the same, including the old jail doors!

I stay here frequently and it’s always been a comfortable stay, they have unlimited wifi, a great kitchen, Netflix and it’s based in a great trendy area of Christchurch, which has some great entertainment, pubs and is very close to AMI Stadium and the city as well, also you can learn more about the Jail, with some of the cells left as is after the decommissioning.

Definitely give Jailhouse Accommodation a try if you’re in Christchurch, it’s definitely a worthwhile experience.

These vlogs coming out aren’t my best work - I know. A lot of distractions with family not wanting to be on camera as well as needing to get into the routine like I did in Japan. I will endeavour to make it better once I’ve finished my Christchurch series.

I can’t believe there’s actually capsule hotels in New Zealand! I loved my experience in Japan with Nine Hours and I seriously missed that quirky part of being in something similar to a spaceship (or hibernation chamber 😂😂😂)

When I found out that Jucy Snooze had a capsule hotel I wanted to check it out, and the best thing is, it was only a 10 minute walk from the Airport!

I reckon Jucy Snooze has it made for those coming off a red eye from Australia or are leaving on an early morning flight to Australia because its in a perfect location and you can get a decent amount of shut eye, whatever you decide to do!

Jucy Snooze is also really inexpensive too, from NZ$30 a night, you really can’t go wrong, there’s a great common room where there’s hammocks, a kitchen and lounge chairs everywhere to sit and read or even plane spot!

I’ll be making sure to use Jucy Snooze again if I happen to fly on a late night flight from Australia, as it’s really that perfect!

These vlogs coming out aren’t my best work - I know. A lot of distractions with family not wanting to be on camera as well as needing to get into the routine like I did in Japan. I will endeavour to make it better once I’ve finished my Christchurch series.
