Romelu Lukaku reveals major change ensuring he thrives under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Romelu Lukaku hailed “ice-cold” finisher Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for making him more ruthless in front of goal.
Lukaku has been working with Solskjaer for less than three weeks, but the Manchester United caretaker boss is already getting the best out of the £75million forward.
The striker took his goal tally to three in as many games – as many as he scored in his previous 18 for United - with his cool finish from a tight angle to seal victory and United’s place in the fourth round.
And Lukaku, who endured a tough start to his second season at United before Jose Mourinho was sacked, paid tribute to Solskjaer for the impact he has had on him.
“I know he was ice-cold when he was in front of the goal and that’s something I like,” said Lukaku.
“He talks to me all the time - all the time - and I like that. And he plays in a way that I like to play, and also the rest of the team.”
Asked what specific advice Solskjaer had given him, Lukaku said: “A lot. Movement-wise, and stuff like that.
“But obviously he knows the type of striker I am and I think from the first day when I came back in, he did a total analysis of my game.
“I was really surprised. He helped me a lot and I am looking forward to keeping on working with him.
“He really wants me to face the goal, because he knows that when I’m facing the goal, that’s when I’m at my most dangerous, my best, moving off the shoulder of the defenders and stuff like that.
“But also to try to stay on the move all the time and the work that we have been doing over the last couple of weeks is good. I just take it every day at a time and I want to improve my game
“Everything is going well for me, personally, and football-wise as well. I just want to help the team as much as I can.”
Juan Mata gave United the lead from the penalty spot after VAR was used to determine he had been fouled before Fred – who was offside – scored.
Lukaku made sure of the win moments before half-time, latching on to a pass from Alexis Sanchez before rounding the keeper and steering the ball into the net.
United flew straight to Dubai for a four-day warm weather training camp ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham, their first real test under Solskjaer, who has won his first five games, matching legendary former boss Sir Matt Busby.
On the Dubai trip, Lukaku said: “It’s going to be good for us as a team because we’re performing really well and now we’re going away.
“We do a lot of stuff together off the pitch and now we are going to be together for a week and hopefully it will help us become an even tighter unit.”
